What is Executive Function?

Executive Function (EF) refers to the skills needed for the deliberate, goal-directed self-management of attention, thought, action, emotion, and motivation. These skills, which include cognitive flexibility, working memory, and inhibitory control, develop rapidly during early childhood, support school readiness and socioemotional competence, and more generally, serve as a foundation for effective learning and adaptation across a wide range of situations.

This course is a brief introduction to Executive Function – what it is, why you should care about it, and how to understand the effect its development has on children.

Key Ideas:

  • Define Executive Function
  • Understand how Executive Function is related to brain processing and social-emotional development
  • Understand the influence Executive Function has in the lives of you and your children
  • Identify ways to promote the development of strong Executive Function skills.

great overview for executive function

I think EF is undervalued by educators and professionals. This is a great overview. I wish it talked more about facilitating EF skills in adolescents because this is where I begin to really see deficits in EF impacting school-age children. Many elementary-aged students are coddled, and are sent right off to middle school with no supports, and poor EF skills.

Absolutely Brilliant!

Wonderful starter for discussing what EF is all about. Good resources to continue on the journey to learn ways to incorporate this with children - lots more material to even google / research (because now you know what to look for).

Most informative EF course in a nutshell

I liked: 1. the short and crisp explanation under each of the topics and very informative and useful. 2. well organized with examples 3. course developed keeping in mind the busy schedule of parents - the course can be completed in a limited time 4. Under the last module- there could be many more examples for strategies in EF to implement at home
